Simple 5-Minute DIY Project Transforms Boring Outlet Covers Into Beautiful Modern Night Lights

How many times have you stumbled in the dark on the way to the bathroom or kitchen in the middle of the night? Many people light their way with night lights in hallways, landings, kitchens, bathrooms — anywhere something could make you go bump in the night.

Most nightlights are conspicuous plug-in devices in fancy shapes, sizes and colors. Once you’ve plugged one into your wall outlet, you’re left with only one socket free. (And, I don’t know about you, but those sockets are precious commodities in my home!) Some designer night lights even cover both sockets, rendering the outlet completely useless.

Now you can have the best of both worlds. The EcoPowerPlate is a battery-free, plug-free LED night light that replaces your wall outlet’s standard cover plate. It looks like an ordinary wall outlet during the day but turns into a source of illumination at night.

How does it work?

The EcoPowerPlate replaces your existing outlet cover with one that draws power directly from your outlet… without using up any of the sockets. Instead, it uses two metal contact plates on the back of the GuideLight. These insulated prongs contact the side screw terminals on the sides of your outlet and draw the power to turn on three LEDs on the bottom of the plate. Really, it’s quite genius. But that’s not all it does...

The EcoPowerPlate’s built-in sensor automatically shuts off the LED light during the day, and turns it back on after dark. This is no dim bulb... The LED light’s brightness is 3 lumens, the standard brightness for nightlights. Plus, the LED lights can last for more than 25 years and use less than 10 cents of energy annually. And, because the EcoPowerPlate doesn’t stick out of the wall socket like a plug-in fixture does, there’s no danger of little ones plucking it out and harming themselves.

But, even more amazing than the EcoPowerPlate, is the story behind it…

Born out of an injury suffered at home...

One night, after an evening out, a few glasses of wine and some good conversation, Otis and Anne Schwartz retired to bed. Little did they know, after that night, their lives would be changed forever...

You see, later in the evening, Anne woke up to use the bathroom, which was downstairs. So, she headed toward the staircase. But, in the dark hallway, she misjudged the first step…

Anne crashed down the wooden steps, severely injuring herself. Woken by the noise, Otis, rushed out to see what was wrong. Seeing his unresponsive wife crumpled at the bottom of the staircase, Otis called 911, and Anne was rushed to the hospital. He wasn’t sure what kind of injuries she might have sustained.

The doctors informed the couple that Anne had broken her ankle, which, given the circumstances, was extraordinarily lucky. But, Otis still blamed himself for not having thought of putting nightlights in the upstairs hallway.

As soon as they got back from the hospital, Otis set out to get nightlights. But he didn’t like anything that was in the stores. Either they were too dim, or he thought they were too bulky. (An engineer, Otis liked everything to be sleek looking.)

So, Otis used his mechanical expertise to craft the prototype for the EcoPowerPlate. It was so sleek looking and “futuristic,” that soon his family and friends were asking to buy them off him. It seemed Otis had a good business opportunity on his hands…

And, so, the EcoPowerPlate was born.

Many Houses Seems To Be Getting In On This New Guidelight

Homeowners across the country are loving the convenience and safety that EcoPowerPlate brings to them. Today, EcoPowerPlate is being used in over 1 million homes… and counting!

In fact, In Home Magazine gave the EcoPowerPlate the Best New Design of the Year Award.

Check out how others are using them around their homes:

But… Is it Really Worth All This Hype?

Since its debut, the EcoPowerPlate has been in a state of constant flux, shifting between IN STOCK to SOLD OUT nearly every other week. And, it’s amassed a ton of loyal followers from all over the world!

The EcoPowerPlate has easily developed an “in the know” cult following. Here are some customer reviews:

"Ever since my son was born (he's almost 3 years old) I have been looking for a perfect night light. I originally wanted a nightlight that had a wire instead of being directly on the outlet. My son is more likely to pull those ones out of the outlet. Now I finally found the perfect light."

- Kerry Black

"I have installed four of these innovative night lights in my house so far. I am very happy with how they work and how easy they are to install."

- Carole Gibson

"Ecopowerplate is easy to install after shutting off main power supply from the circuit breaker. Make sure you get a voltage tester to ensure safety."

- Eunice Boyd

"This thing is just so cool. It's like having movie theatre lighting. A couple of these strategically placed and you can keep the lights off and still make your way through the mostly darkened hallway to the bathroom or to get you some excessively buttered popcorn."

- Chad McCormick

I wanted to get a professional’s opinion on the EcoPowerPlate, so I talked to celebrity contractor Adam Wilkerson, to see if the hype was justified. Here’s his take:

I’ve done a ton of renovations for my celebrity clients. And, ever since I found out about the EcoPowerPlate, I’ve installed them in every single celebrity home I’ve worked on. Simply put, they’re sleek and sexy and all of my clients love them. They’re a great, modern way to keep your hallways lit at night without worrying about plugging and unplugging, turning them on, and, taking up one or both outlets. I can’t recommend these enough!

- Adam Wilkerson, Star of Celebrity Home Renovation

After Adam Wilkerson’s endorsement, I was sold and needed to install EcoPowerPlate in my own house

Since they’re sold online-only, I visited EcoPowerPlate’s official website and ordered a set of four. They arrived within the week.

The package came with everything I needed, and the instructions were clear and easy to follow.

Installation is quick and easy. Turn off the main power to the outlet, unscrew the existing cover plate, snap the EcoPowerPlate onto the outlet and screw the plate into place. No messy wires to deal with!

After its installed, it looks exactly like any outlet plate. But at night, it shines.

Enough light at night to know where the furniture and light the way.
Is it Worth it?

At $30 for a set of 3, the answer is: Yes, definitely.

Now, seeing my way around the halls at night is no problem. And, the kids don’t have to wake me up to ask me to take them to the bathroom. And, I’ve been receiving a ton of compliments from guests and family who have visited.

In fact, I liked the EcoPowerPlate so much, that I ended up buying 5 more for my parents. It was a nice little thoughtful gift, and now I know they won’t have any trouble bumping into anything at night.

My advice: Get the EcoPowerPlate if you’re looking for a sleek, non-intrusive way to light up your hallways and rooms at night.

Great lighting and easy to install. I used these to replace a number of night lights, it frees up the socket and looks much better than a night light. It can also work in concert with child proof plugs so you have a night light but with the socket protected.

Worked as advertised. I put them in homes built in '98 and also '74. They popped right in and worked perfectly. Instant gratification and shipping was plenty fast.

These work exactly as described. Installs in under 2 minutes and provides lots of light. These are making my hallways safe for navigating the night. The sensor is extremely accurate and only comes on when it is a certain darkness. I have one in the kitchen counter top that has since taken over the job of the refrigerator water light.

These are great! I was able to get rid of several conventional nightlights that protrude from our wall that take up one (and sometime two) wall plugs. The versatility is perfect for me.

It is so simple to install, yet makes a great impact. I placed one in my front entry hallway to provide light as I entered my home at night. I also have one over the kitchen sink, which provides light if I entered the house from the back door. It is bright enough to guide you, but not too bright to become distracting.
